Not as much as the risk to get virus-infected code or map files that disable your car forever!

You're probably right.
Now, the alternative is to go to one of the 100s sellers online with prices going from a few $ to a few 100s, but where are their maps or code from? How is that safer?

I'm not trying to justify anything here, just pointing out how difficult it is when you're new to the BMW world, to find your way :-)

current situation is that

It seems pretty obvious with the banner at the top of the page saying "In order to use the PM system and be a full fledged member of this community, you will have to make 4 post replies and wait 1 hour for your account to be upgraded."
